Word of the Season: Hydration. Winter Favourites 2018

This winter, one of my priorities has been skin care. With the changing temperatures from freezing cold to mild spring-like, my skin has definitely had some challenging moments. I have found some great products that have got me through this winter that I really want to share with you all.

Keeping to the topic of skin care, I really have been loving the La Roche-Posay line this season. I have dry, sensitive skin and this skincare line has rehydrated and soothed my skin with no irritation. The La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water has been one of my most favourite purchases this season. I like to call this product “a little sip of water for the face”. This product soothes and rehydrates your skin leaving it feeling really refreshed. I apply this after I wash my face, just before I moisturize. This is also great to reapply throughout the day if your skin is feeling dry and dehydrated. It also works great to refresh your makeup. You can purchase this from Shoppers Drugmart and it retails for $15.00 for a large can.

Keeping with the same line, I changed up my moisturizer this season and started using the La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Light Moisturizer. This product feels light and absorbs very nicely into the skin leaving it feeling really soft! This product is long-lasting, and it has kept my skin feeling moisturized all day long- much longer than any other product that I have used. I also purchased this at Shoppers Drugmart and it retails for $38.50.

Since we are talking skin care and moisturizer, I wanted to share my new favourite hand cream. I received the AHAVA Mineral Hand Cream with Dead Sea Water in my Winter Fab Fit Fun Box (see box review post here). The cream feels a bit thicker when applying, but the product absorbs really well into the skin leaving your hands feeling so soft and hydrated. I’ve used a few of the Dead Sea mineral products before and they really are amazing! This product is a godsend, especially with such this dry cold winter that is wrecking havoc on the skin. This retails for $33.00 from Fab Fit Fun, but I found a smaller travel size that you can order online at Hudson’s Bay for $12.00.

This winter, I also tried the Cover Girl Vitalist Elixir Foundation and really fell in love with it. I find it is a light to medium coverage (definitely buildable) and it blends really nicely. It is very natural looking when applied and it is SPF 20 which is also fantastic. For a drugstore brand, this is a great quality foundation that comes in tons of shades and it is a really affordable price for $14. Keep an eye out for it to go on sale- I purchased mine for about $11 (I use the shade Classic Ivory).

During one of my random browsing sessions at Shoppers Drugmart this winter, I came across my next two winter favourites. Firstly, I picked up the L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion. I use it over my makeup as a highlight/glow. It is very natural looking and it is a hydrating cream which feels great on the skin especially during the winter months.

During my browsing session, I also picked up the new Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara. I have been extremely faithful to the Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume Mascara and have never been able to find another product that came close to the amount of coverage/fullness and volume it gave my lashes. I will say, that the Total Temptation Mascara is a pretty close second. I love how light it is on my lashes, and it really gives me the fullness and volume that I love. I have been using this product religiously over the last few months and really love it. The only thing I will add is that it is a bit more messy/wet on application so you need to take a bit more time to make sure it doesn’t get everywhere. I picked this product up at Shoppers Drugmart for $11.

Moving on to lifestyle favourites, I need to rave about these Reading Socks from Indigo. These were a gift from my husband and they are perfect for snuggling up in on a cold winter day. These come in one size fits most, but have lots of room in them so I wouldn’t worry at all on sizing. There are lots of fun patterns to choose from (the outside is a thick knit material) and these socks are unbelievably soft inside as they have a furry sherpa lining inside the sock. These socks are undeniably comfortable! The price may seem steep, but they are worth every penny- trust me! These reading socks would make a perfect gift paired with a great book. These retail for $34.50 from Indigo.

This year, I got motivated and started back into an exercise routine. I like to start my day off with a protein shake, followed by a workout and then a small breakfast. I’m not a big fan of the taste of many protein powders, but I found the Allmax Nutrition IsoNatural Whey Protein Isolate (I like the chocolate flavour) and I really love it. It is also 97% lactose free which is a key selling feature for me. It tastes delicious regardless if you use water, milk or even blend it into a smoothie. I purchased this 2 lb container from Supplements Canada for $42.99 and I find it lasts me about two months.

When I first saw this next baby product on the shelf I thought it was a bit of a money grab, but another mama told me these were a “must have” so I picked up a package to try when cold season rolled around. Our little guy did get a cold this winter and his little nose started getting red and irritated from tissues. I pulled out these Boogie Wipes which are a saline wipe alternative to a tissue. The wipes easily removed the mucus with minimal wiping and were very gentle on the nose. These are a must have for cold season for the little one in our home now. I picked up my package at Shoppers Drugmart for $4.29.

Last but not least, “His” favourite of the winter was his new Sorel Men’s Caribou Winter Boots. My hubby has been one to primarily wear his work boots for work, casual outings and outdoor activities. He has been talking about getting a good pair of winter boots for a few years, but it has just never happened especially with him being so picky about footwear. This past November during the Black Friday online sales, I found men’s Sorel boots on sale for a great price online- too good of a deal to pass up. My husband said he didn’t realize how much he needed a good pair of winter boots until he got these and started wearing them. They look really sharp (they come in a variety of colours) and they feel good (and warm) on his feet. I love that the material is a waterproof leather, and it keeps your feet dry and very warm. I have a pair of women’s Sorel winter boots and I absolutely love them. I’ll definitely be buying a pair for our little one next winter! We purchased these directly from the Sorel website. They retail for $200, but I just checked and they are on sale right now for $130!

This winter really encouraged me to focus on skin care, health and staying warm and cozy. I found some great new products that really helped me get through the most undesirable time of the year. That being said, I am very much looking forward to spring, getting out of the house (and out-of-town), spring cleaning, shopping for back to work post maternity leave and finding some great products to share with you all. Stay tuned for more updates!
