I am looking forward to posting some seasonal favourite reviews in 2018, but to get started, I thought I’d share some of my favourite things from 2017.
My beauty favourites from this year were a little more simple as I have been home on maternity leave with an infant and didn’t really have the time or desire to wear much makeup. I focused mostly on skin care and basic makeup (foundation, concealer and mascara) when I did wear makeup.
I received the Whish Beauty Mudmask as part of a Fab Fit Fun box this year and it is easily one of my favourite masks this year. You only need to put a thin layer on for just a few minutes and it leaves your skin feeling so smooth, hydrated and soft. It also has a very soft apricot scent to it which I also really like.
This summer I started using the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution Make Up Remover. It does a great job at removing make up and leaves your skin feeling fresh and clean without leaving any oiliness or residue behind. It is easily accessible at Shoppers Drugmart.
This fall I went to the Mac store at the Masonville Mall in London and had a consultation to get matched for foundation, concealer and powder. I had a great experience and love the products I picked up. I don’t wear full makeup every day, but on the days that I do wear it, I wanted something quick to put on but that is also medium to full coverage and doesn’t look like you are wearing a lot of makeup. I picked up the Mac Studio Fix Fluid Foundation in N5, Mac Pro Longwear Concealer in NW20 and Mineralize Skinfinish Powder in Medium Plus
For my birthday, my sister got me the Tarte Eyeshadow Palette Volume II – Rainforest of the Sea. These shadows have a light shimmer to them and are really pigmented without needing to wet your brush. I love how the colours look with my skin tone. This is definitely a favourite palette.
With a new baby this past year there are days that I really did not want nor need to get out of my pyjamas. I came across this Skinny PJ Set from La Senza and they are the comfiest pyjamas I have owned in a long time. The set contains a fitted legging and a 3/4 sleeved top that is loose-fitting. The fabric is super soft and stays soft even after many washes. There are a ton of great prints so you can buy many pairs just like I did!
I drank so much water during pregnancy and while breastfeeding that this Swell Reusable Water Bottle really came in handy. This bottle keeps water ice-cold for at least 12 hours and keeps it cool for up to 24 hours. We even brought it out golfing on a very humid summer day and the water was still ice cold! I also use it now to carry hot water for baby bottles and it keeps the water nice and hot (even on these freezing cold days we have been having recently). Such a lifesaver!
With the Seasoned Life, there are so many recipes I love from this book and this was probably my most used cookbook this year. My favourite recipes were brown sugar chicken, lemon beer chicken and game day chili. I have gifted this book to friends as well as it has lots of dishes that you will actually make over and over!
With Cravings, I love the variety of recipes. Some recipes can take shortcuts and use deli bought cooked chicken, others are more junk-foody, and then you have some recipes that take a bit more time to prepare. I still have a lot of recipes I want to try but my favourites so far are the breakfast sandwich patties, sausage meatloaf, chicken noodle soup, and many of the pasta dishes. I hear she is coming out with a Cravings 2 and I can’t wait!
I would normally have home and baby favourites as two categories, but as our son was born in 2017, a lot of the home focus was getting ready for baby so I’ll combine them both this time around! We bought this Ikea Hemnes dresser to use as a dresser for the nursery and also to double as a change table. It was a great price, solid wood and our son can continue to use it as he grows. A tip for this one: it takes forever to assemble and has what seems to be a million pieces to connect (did I mention it was from Ikea…). I also took forever trying to figure out if I wanted the colour “white” or “white stain” (still not really sure the difference). I finally chose “white stain” and it looks fine with the other white furniture in the nursery.
My official baby favourite is this Rocky Mountain Soap Factory Baby Bum Balm. The company Rocky Mountain Soap Factory is based out of Alberta and uses all natural ingredients. This cream is amazing for diaper rash and is the best out of all the products we have tried. A little goes a long way and the tub lasted us 6 months!
Another baby/fashion favourite is this diaper bag I purchased from Lily Jade. I love me a nice handbag so it was no shock to most that I was going to splurge on a diaper bag. The leather is so soft and great quality and Lily Jade has really rich beautiful colours of leather. The one I ordered was the Madeline in Brandy and Silver. Shortly after I ordered mine they launched the navy blue colour which I also love. These bags have a beautiful blue/mint lining, a matching changing pad and a removable organizer that you can take out and still use the bag on its own. I also love how you can wear the bag three ways: on your shoulder, crossbody or as a backpack. There are lots of different styles and colours to choose from as well.
This was definitely a huge splurge, but if you watch online, they have amazing sales where you can get them at least $100 off. This is an American company, so if you order it, be prepared for the exchange conversion.
My tech favourite of 2017 is easily my Kobo Aura One e-reader. My hubby bought it for me before baby arrived. I love to read and this made reading with a new babe so easy as I could practically read hands free while I rocked baby to sleep or nursed. Extra features such as soft night lighting was really helpful while i was up in the middle of the night (also great for reading in bed so you don’t disturb your partner) and it is also waterproof so you can easily read in the tub or at the pool without worrying about damaging your e-reader. This one also uses the Overdrive program to connect to your local library so you can read for free! I think I’ve read more books this year than I have in a long time just because this eReader makes it so easy!
Our pet favourite for 2017 was this Kong Frisbee. Our dog is so obsessed with it that he thinks every person who visits our home needs to play with it. We even need to play it through the winter. It is super durable and even seemingly indestructible. I did learn this fall that it does not float as I watched it slowly sink to the bottom of the lake. Luckily, I was able to recover it!
Last but not least we had to share a “his” favourite. This year my hubby purchased his first utility trailer (5×10 Sport-Lite) from Highland Trailer Sales out of Cambridge, Ontario. Something we really liked was that the owners are actually from our neck of the woods but had relocated to Cambridge. My hubby called and custom-built the trailer with accessories that he wanted for his needs and uses and they called us back when it was built and ready to pick up. In a rural area it is great for towing lawn tractors, atvs, furniture, loads to the dump and even loads of topsoil or mulch for our property. We definitely got our use of it this fall and winter already and have many plans for it this coming spring and summer. A tip for this one; make sure you coat the wood base of this with oil to seal the boards from water damage.
Keep an eye out for my seasonal favourites coming in 2018. I’ll have a mix of beauty, home and baby product loves from the season and of course, we will have more of “his favourites” as well. Talk to you again in the new year!
